An initiative to develop a sustainable community in a rural zone
Surf House is an infrastructure created by the Surf Ghana Collective to provide free internet access, computer usage, training, and workshops to the Busua community. Our aim is to establish a secure and supportive environment where young people can learn, develop skills, and connect with the world.
We plan to sustain the Surf House with the support of incomes from our services like Wi-Fi, homestays and merchandise (t-shirts and locally-made crafts) sales. With this initiative, we can offer main of our services to the community for free. At Surf House, we are committed to giving back to the community and creating opportunities for growth and empowerment.
Design collaboration and long-term engagement
Surf Ghana commissioned Glenn DeRoché and Juergen Strohmayer to design and build the Surf House in close dialogue with the Busua community. The Accra-based duo collaborated on the project to support Surf Ghana’s community work and, as a result, founded the architecture studio DeRoché Strohmayer. The studio prioritizes ecologically beneficial practices, integrating advanced technology with practical and community-oriented design principles. The Surf House has gained international recognition and is exhibited at the Architettura Biennale 2023.
Glenn DeRoché is passionate about engaging with region-specific artisans to upscale local materials and building techniques to develop more sustainable, contemporary building practices among communities in the Caribbean, the US, and West Africa. Juergen Strohmayer’s design and research projects address material and typological approaches to climate change, community-oriented design, and land-use through long-term, transdisciplinary networks between West Africa and Europe.
